Hermosa Beach, C.A. – Beginning May 1st, the Hermosa Beach Farmers’ Market, which takes place each Wednesday from 1-6pm on Pier Avenue, will reward Hermosa Beach residents and visitors when they collect rubbish from the beach and streets during their visit to the weekly Farmers’ Market. The market will provide shoppers with collection pales and give participants a $1 market buck, redeemable with any vendor, for each container of found-trash turned in.
The market also has a “Take a Bag, Leave a Bag” program which provides reusable bags for shoppers who have left or forgot theirs at home. Furthermore, the market has hosted pop-up zero-waste refill stations to support efforts to reduce single-use plastic consumption.
“Farmers’ markets are healthy places,” says market manager Aubrey Yarbrough. “When you walk through a market –especially a market next to the ocean– and you buy a pint of raspberries, you’re de-stressing as you buy healthy food! We’re excited to extend the healing aspects of our farmers’ market and begin contributing to the health of the ocean.”
The market also hosts free yoga every week from 2-3pm and organizes special events like garden workshops, educational kids concerts, and a Chef-to-Farmer Series which invites local chefs to the market and provides market-goers with seasonal recipes and cooking tips.
“This a place for people to make conscious buying decisions that support the local economy and the environment. We recognize the impact that farmers’ markets have in local communities and we are passionate about providing more reasons for residents to take advantage of this beautiful Market by Hermosa’s treasured pier,” Aubrey stated.
Hermosa residents and visitors are invited to visit the market, pick up a pail, and help keep Hermosa the cleanest beach around. Participants will receive a Market Buck for each pale collected to spend with any of the local farmers, food purveyors, or artisans on site. This promotion will launch on May 1st and will occur each first Wednesday of the month thereafter.
