South Bay Weekend: The Republic of Funk, El Porto Challenge, Earth Day Celebration, Life’s A Beach, Puddle of Mudd, Education Benefit, Tidepool Walk, Open Studios & 26th DylanFest

Wave Addiction is a nonprofit organization on a simple mission: to lead individual surfers to live more ocean minded lifestyles through upbeat community events in the South Bay, the greater Los Angeles area, and beyond. Below are a list of South Bay Events happening this weekend.

El Camino College Concert Jazz Band to Present The Republic of Funk: Friday, April 29, 2016 – 8:00 PM The El Camino College Concert Jazz Band will present “The Republic of Funk” at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29 in Marsee Auditorium. Faculty member and composer/conductor Alan Chan will lead this concert that will showcase the funk, fusion and hip-hop regimes in the jazz big band world. The concert will feature music written by composers representing three countries: Bartczak, USA Haines, UK Mintzer, USA Shorter, USA and Zawinul, Austria. Tickets to the “The Republic of Funk” performance are $10 and may be purchased online at www.centerforthearts.org, by phone at 310-329-5345 or toll-free at 800-832-ARTS.

El Porto Challenge : Saturday, April 30, 2016 – 8:00 AM The South Bay Boardriders Club host a surf contest this Saturday at El Porto in the morning. The event will be sponsored by Dive N Surf and others. All ages and skill levels will be participating like Micro Groms (under 9), Legends (over 50), a longboard division, and many others. Entry deadline for El Porto Challenge is closed but come on out and support the South Bay Boardriders and their radical surf contest.

Earth Day Celebration and Concert at Polliwog Park: Saturday, April 30, 2016 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM Join the City of Manhattan Beach and V.O.I.C.E (Volunteers and Organizations Improving the Community’s Environment) for the 24th Annual Earth Day Celebration and Concert at Polliwog Park. The day’s events feature a large assortment of fresh food and family fun; including music, games, eco-friendly products and information on the City of Manhattan Beach’s efforts toward making their city a greater and greener place to live, play and work. Check out the schedule of events on Manhattan Beach’s website. Polliwog Park is located at 1601 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Manhattan Beach.

Life’s A Beach Art Exhibit : Saturday, April 30, 2016 – 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Destination:Art is hosting an exhibition of Beach Themed Art celebrating all things beachy by the talented local artists of the South Bay. Come see new works by our Gallery and Studio Artists and meet 6 new artists who will be debuting at this public reception: Kathy Bergstrom, Kyle Boone, Charlotte Moore, Lois Olsen, Erika Snow Robinson & David Wolfram. Life’s A Beach is a traveling art show and will be featured at Java Man in Hermosa Beach before moving onto other South Bay venues. Puddle Of Mudd at Saint Rocke: Saturday, April 30, 2016 – 6:00 PM – 2:00 AM After four albums, platinum-plus sales, sold-out crowds and more than a dozen radio hits, Puddle of Mudd has cemented its reputation and its repertoire in the rock ‘n’ roll world. Puddle of Mudd along with guest artists perform live at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach; 142 Pacific Coast Hwy. tickets

Round Up for Education Benefiting Torrance Education Foundation: Saturday, April 30, 2016 – 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM The Torrance Education Foundation is having a Western-themed benefit event to raise funds to support the Torrance Unified School District. Come out for music and dancing, a barbecue dinner, auctions and an opportunity to win a Lexus! Reservations for the Round Up can be made for $125 per person. Location: DoubleTree Hilton Hotel; tickets

Last Tidepool Walk of the Season : Sunday, May 1, 2016 – 10:30 AM – Noon This is Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s last Tidepool Walk of the season! CMA’s Educators conduct tours of the Point Fermin tidepools this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Attend an informative slide show in the John M. Olguin Auditorium, then come along on a naturalist-led ramble on the rocks to see animals in their natural habitat. Outdoor clothing and sneakers advised. Open Studios Day: Sunday, May 1, 2016 – Noon – 4:00 PM Open Studios Day is a bi-annual event at Angels Gate Cultural Center celebrating all that happens on their campus and the diverse and lively community that makes it unique. Over 50 Studio Artists will open their doors for you to see what they create in their studios. The Artists in Classroom and Community Class programs demonstrate the work that happens onsite and in the community throughout the year. The gallery will open three new exhibitions featuring both locally and nationally recognized artists. Angels Gate Cultural Center is located at 3601 S Gaffey St. in San Pedro.

26th Annual DylanFest: Sunday, May 1, 2016 – Noon – 8:00 PM Tickets to 26th Annual DylanFest, May 1st, featuring music from the man himself, Bob Dylan, with Andy & Renee & Hard Rain and over 60 other musicians, are on sale with advance pricing, $30, and $35 at the door. DylanFest started with out with the band Hard Rain and a few friends doing 4 sets of Bob Dylan songs, and it has grown to a 8-hour event with over 50 musicians performing over 60 Dylan songs. Some audience members like to dress-up in costume for Dylanfest, using themes found in Dylan’s songs to accent their apparel (Think “Tangled Up in Blue” or “Like a Rolling Stone”). DylanFest takes place outside at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center in the Torino Plaza. tickets
