Believe it or not, the community driven, grant funded organization that barnstorms our local parks with professional theatre quality interpretations of England’s best known bard every summer, Shakespeare by the Sea, is currently in their 18th season. A true gift for all ages since the cost of admission is free and there maybe no other form of entertainment as personable as watching live actors perform under the wits of public space and open air. Although the season is almost over, Shakespeare by the Sea stops by Polliwog park this weekend in Manhattan Beach featuring two of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies: “The Tempest”, an ocean-borne, magical tale of romance woven with rich poetry; and “As You Like It”, the enchanting take of love set in the Forest of Arden.
Southern California audiences have come to love Shakespeare by the Sea for its professionally-crafted productions of Shakespeare’s timeless plays, presented completely free of admission at dozens of local parks each summer. The tour has become a much-anticipated event each summer, drawing a collective audience of nearly 25,000 each summer to enjoy Shakespeare under the summer sky.
This Friday at Polliwog Park come out early to get a seat close to the stage and watch “The Tempest” at 7 p.m. On Saturday Shakespeare by the Sea performs “As You Like It” at 7 p.m. www.shakespearebythesea.org
