San Pedro, CA – This Friday treat yourself to a crawler, long john, bear claw, maple bar, a glazed twist, or buttermilk bar to support The Salvation Army’s National Donut Day celebration honoring veterans on Friday, June 5 at the USS Iowa.
It is a celebration featuring a donut themed festival in front of the USS Iowa with attendees getting to relive history as Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” in historical costume serve up sweet treats. The public is welcome between 8 am – 10 am to enjoy live music, a special presentation honoring The Salvation Army’s programs for veterans and, of course, plenty of gourmet donuts to go around.

Can’t make it to the Iowa? Head to one of more than 1,000 participating local donut shops to enjoy a treasured treat and to pay tribute to veterans everywhere. A portion of all sales, up to $10,000, at donut shops and bakeries displaying the National Donut Day poster will be donated to The Salvation Army’s Haven Program for veterans.
National Donut Day commemorates the women volunteers who cooked donuts on the World War I battlefield, providing nourishment and care for American G.I.s. The pastries – virtually unknown in the States at the time – proved so popular that when the “doughboys” returned home, their demand for the sweet treat created the culinary phenomenon of the donut that has been embedded in American culture ever since.
