Annual King Harbor Sea Fair Brings Tall Ships to Redondo

The 7th annual King Harbor Sea Fair pushes off this Sunday from noon to 5pm in an effort to educate the public about boating safety and provide an in-person platform for various local organizations that offer opportunities to enjoy and care for the ocean. Totally free and open to the public, the Sea Fair will take place in three locations: King Harbor Yacht Club, 280 Yacht Club Way; Redondo Beach Yacht Club, 210 Yacht Club Way; and the SEA Lab, 1021 N. Harbor Drive. The King Harbor Boating Foundation partnered up with SEA Lab this year, a hands-on facility that offers coastal science education, to add a bit more depth and attention to the marine community around the South Bay. According to Brent Scheiwe, SEA Lab’s program director, “The goal is to enhance the overall experience by providing more fun and educational opportunities for all Sea Fair visitors.”

A beach clean-up hosted by Heal the Bay begins at noon near the Chart House and all participants must sign a waiver. New to the fair this year courtesy of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute is a visit from a 110-foot tall ship named Irving Johnson. Fair goers can tour the ship for free or book an actual passage with the tall ship either for its return voyage back to berth in San Pedro’s Ports O’Call Village on Sunday or reserve on overnight trip with dinner included. Space is limited for two Sand Sculpture Workshops that will be taught by expert sand sculptor Castles by Karch. Stand-up paddleboard demos, outrigger canoe rides, water-safety lessons, and a host of crafts and activities for kids are some of the other attractions at Sunday’s King Harbor Sea Fair.

The Sea Fair is held the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend to coincide with the kick-off of National
Safe Boating Week, with the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary as key partners. In the past,
this event has been hosted solely at King Harbor Yacht Club. This year, the Sea Fair will stretch from
the SEA Lab through the King Harbor Marina parking lot to the premises of King Harbor Yacht Club.

A free Sea Fair shuttle van will be in continuous service with stops (look for signs) at AES parking lot, SEA Lab, Redondo Beach Yacht Club (RBYC), King Harbor Marina & KHYC. www.khbf.org/seafair
