The craft beer movement is forever evolving around here in the South Bay (and beyond), El Segundo Brewery’s Citra Pale on tap at Dodger Stadium, bottles of Strand Brewery’s 24th Street Pale Ale available at Costco’s Torrance location, and a female owned brewery, Three Weav3rs Brewing Co. looks to kickstarter to raise funds for a brewery in Inglewood. All very capitalistic and crafty strategies that push the fruits of craft beer closer to the consumer. This Saturday, April 12th, rather than pitching the business of craft beer, Obsura Society LA organizes an event with a different focus, one that mixes palate and cerebral flavors.
The event is colorfully called “Books & Brews” and the first stop along this daytime adventure is an exploration of The International Printing Museum in Carson. The Industrial Revolution gave America large, urban populations that needed to be fed and informed, hence the mass production of the printed word. Indulge the world of books from the early stages of paper-making to lithography and typesetting with a private guided tour of the museum and a hands-on demonstration customized exclusively for this event. The International Printing Museum has perhaps the best collection of antique printing machinery in the world, or at least greater Los Angles.

The real-time history of book printing is paired up nicely with a casual rendezvous over to Smog City Brewery in Torrance. About a two mile drive from the printing museum in Carson. Here, folks can sample all types of suds from Smog City’s catalog of experimental brews like their Groundwork Coffee Porter or Sabre-Tooth Squirrel, a hoppy ale inspired by a not-so-mythic ancient beast. The Book & Brews event cost curious patrons $25 and runs this Saturday, April 12th from 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Transportation from the museum to Smog City Brewery is not provided.
Obscura LA Society is a group of adventurous people who operate as the extension of Atlas Obscura, a definitive guide to the world’s wondrous and curious places. To find out more about this event, visit our website.
