The Redondo Pier Association hosts one of the longest running kite festivals in Southern California this Sunday, March 9th from noon to 5p.m. The Kite Festival has been produced by the Sunshine Kite Company since 1974 and is one of the more visually stunning events around the South Bay. Awards will be presented in several categories: Best Hand-Made Kite, Best Ground Display, Highest Flying Kite, and the Youngest and Youngest at Heart Kite Flyers. The public is invited to help launch a massive 25’ by 14’ foot kite too.
One of the biggest events of the year put on the Redondo Pier not only includes the ancient art of kite flying, but is accompanied by other eclectic events like the 11th Annual Redondo Throw Down Yo-Yo Competition and the 8th Annual Craig’s Hot Dog on a Stick Eating Contest. Winner of this glutinous challenge receives a cash prize of $200.
The cost to attend this event is FREE! Be sure and bring a high resolution smartphone camera as kite flying against the backdrop of Redondo Pier is quite spectacular and makes for an awesome social share.
Most of the energy and execution that make the Festival of the Kite an annual success come from the partnership of local sponsors and charities. One of this year’s charitable sponsors is called Love in the Mirror, a non-profit organization founded by boy who was struck with compassion when he first volunteered to feed the homeless in downtown Los Angeles. The boy is named Joseph Corona and today he helps run Love in the Mirror according to an article in the Huffington Post. One of the main goals of Love in the Mirror is to provide food, clothing, and other needs for homeless & disadvantaged youth.
