South Bay Events presents its pick of the month for August 2013!
There is a new celebrity at the edge of Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village that serves high end microbrews, open air arena rock in high definition and a menu that boasts some tasty licks to the tune of pizzas, sandwiches, and hamburgers. It’s now an international franchise that was born in the most humble of Midwestern look a likes, El Segundo. So, like many rock gods with small town roots, the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Palos Verdes Boulevard is now, so to speak, number one on the charts.
Rock & Brews PCH opened this year in early May with Kiss icons Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley entertaining guests for a night of charity and some celebrity driven PR. The dynamic rock duo plan to carry the Rock and Brews brand across the world with approximately 100 new openings in the next five years as their final product is ready for a global tour.
One of the main draws is the craft beer selection (bottle & draft) but Rock & Brews does a fine job at orchestrating a space that is communal and hip. Wooden style picnic tables, a bar, a row of tables with stools, some comfy booths, and outside dining experience that’s heated & cozy create an eating experience that caters to singles, couples, and families. The atmosphere inside breathes a constant ode to rock n roll with flat screen TVs running a continuous loop of epic rock videos featuring the likes of Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, ACDC, The Doors and others. Sliding glass walls create a panoramic view of PCH and help settle the mood for libations.
The craft beer list is long and will take some time to peruse, draft prices range from $6 jameshallison casino – $10 a pour while a high end Belgian brew or cider in a bottle could cost anywhere from $10 – $12. Styles and flavors from the tap are always in rotation and a host of burgeoning local breweries are always available. South Bay brews on tap come from the likes of El Segundo Brewing Company, The Strand, Monkish, Smog City, Brewing, and The Dudes’. Other specialty Belgian beers, pilsners, IPAs, & porters from Stone, Oskar Blues, Ballast Point, Dogfish Head, and Ommegang are also on tap or in bottle.
Nothing better amplifies a cold beverage like a Giant Soft German Pretzel (a rare find in the South Bay) that comes with sweet-hot mustard and bier cheese. Rock and Brew’s Bavarian style soft pretzel is a 2 foot by 1 foot pull apart twist that pairs nicely with a lager, pilsner, or even a more sophisticated IPA like El Segundo Brewing Company’s White Dog IPA.
The menu is simple, down home American comfort food. There is a “slow cooked” pulled pork sandwich that could satisfy most barbecue fans. A Chicago style hot dog that is almost impossible to eat with a pair of hands, fork and knife are required. The turkey burger is a whole hearty substitute for any beef burger on the menu and the pizzas are tasty, particularly the Margaritaville & Bill Graham BBQ Chicken pizzas.
