Love the soundtrack from the award winning film “The Descendants”, starring George Clooney? What fans might not know is that much of the film´s soundtrack stems from a collection of Hawaiian music called “slack key”, an amalgamation of acoustic guitar and voices that accent a laid back style. The traditions of slack key music and Hawaiian culture come together this Sunday at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center for the 6th Annual Southern California Slack Key Festival. One of the most acclaimed Hawaiian concerts to ever leave the islands, this year´s Slack Key Fest takes fans on a Hawaiian musical journey that showcases Grammy nominated slack key artists, an Island Marketplace, and an ever present Aloha spirit.
Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, the music starts at 2:00 PM and the Island Marketplace opens to the public at 11:00 AM. Many of the artists on “The Descendants” soundtrack will appear at this year’s festival including Cyril Pahinui, Jeff Peterson, Dennis Kamakahi and Makana. Rounding out the 2013 lineup is Ledward Kaapana, Jim “Kimo” West, Stephen Inglis and Ken Emerson. To find out more about other Hawaiian artists taking the stage this year, click here.
Good island eats, Hawaiian style donuts, and shave ice are just some of the food items that will be present at this year´s Island Marketplace. Held in conjunction with the Slack Key Fest, Hawaiian artists and craft vendors share their unique treasures from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Parking is free and the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center is located at 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Redondo Beach. Tickets are available online at www.slackkeyfest.com.
