The joy of surfing and the lucrative ideal of being a local surf brand in the beach cities meet this Saturday in Hermosa Beach for the South Bay’s largest surf festival. The event acts as a gathering point between soulful and commercial by honoring surf industry brands, local businesses and some of the most influential names of South Bay’s surfing past and present. This Saturday, April 5th Spyder’s 7th Annual Surf Fest goes off around 11:30a.m. as the city of Hermosa Beach inducts two legendary South Bay surfers, John McFarlane and Sparky Hudson, into their “Surfers Walk of Fame.” Following the induction ceremony, all types of swag giveaways, live music, more hall of fame inductees, fashion shows, and interactive booths hallmark the event till about 7:00p.m. Live music kicks off at the base of the pier with performances from the likes of The Bixby Dicks, Fallen Riviera, Hoist the Colors as well as local talent like Kevin Sousa and Sand Section.
New to the event this year are the LA Surf Awards to be presented at 3 p.m. on the Hermosa Pier Plaza. The Awards recognize four of the most influential standouts for their accomplishments and contributions to surf history, including Palos Verdes’ pro surfer Alex Gray, legendary surf photographer Mike Balzer, and others.
The Hermosa Beach Historical Society sneaks a set in with their 9th Annual Surf Film Fest featuring two films: “Legends of Surf” & “Nelscott Reef Big Wave Contest.” The Surf Film Fest starts at 6:30p.m. on Friday night, April 4th at the Hermosa Beach Community Center. Tickets are $10, or $25 for families.
