Restaurant of the Month: The Source Cafe in Hermosa Beach

South Bay Events presents its pick of the month for May 2014!

Changes in the way we eat and when we eat compound on a daily basis. The best laid plans of any diet or nutrition fad are so often temporary changes with no sustainable healthy effects. Food, now more than ever, is part of our identity. Insight on where it comes from and how it is grown resonate just as much flavor as taste. Simple, organic, farm to table ingredients underpin the strong focus of health and well-being at The Source Café in Hermosa Beach as the propietor & chef, Amber Caudle, infuses her Spanish & Italian style of cooking to meet the nutritious needs of the South Bay community.

The Source put down some roots in December of 2012 and instantly felt like a natural fit along Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach. It is easy for any new restaurant to claim healthy as a menu option but not many can boast an entire menu devoted to optimal nutrition and current food research. This year The Source became the first Hermosa Beach restaurant that is completely void of all Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Clearly, food transparency and mindful eating are some of The Source’s core values.

Quite literally, The Source brings a healthy simplicity to eating out on the go or table-side that features an array of wholesome juices & smoothies, salads, as well as breakfast & lunch items. The transformative power of food as medicine or spiritual healer are evident in the names of various drinks like Tumeric Tonic, The Herbalist, Liquid Recovery, The Revival. The peppery warm and bitter flavor of turmeric mixes with lemon, ginger, cayenne, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar to create Tumeric Tonic, a natural elixir with zeal. Another drinkable refresher uses the dark purple of beets, the sweetness of watermelon, some lemon and mint for a Royal Root juice that’s a perfect quench on any hot day.

The Kale Salad is a subtle taste sensation that balances the tang of roasted tomatoes, lemon, olive oil with the earthiness of kale, garbanzo beans, and roasted fennel. It manages to strike a balance between two worlds that do not always mix, eating healthy and taste. The Smoked Wild Whitefish served on a toasted baguette splashed with tomato and vegan garlic aioli make for a salty-savory complement to any juice, smoothie, or tea on the menu.

The Source is a cornucopia of wealthy nourishment and simplicity under the care of a tenured chef who spent nearly a decade as the executive chef at Mediterraneo near Hermosa Beach Pier. It is a genuine healthy experience fortified with food education and delectable eats & drinks made to sustain a long-lasting healthy lifestyle.
