One of the biggest mammals on earth passes near the South Bay every winter and spring, making its annual north and southbound migrations to and from Baja California. Gray Whale sightings and their migratory patterns are the focus of American Cetacean Society Los Angeles Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project, a mainly volunteer organization that has been tracking Gray Whale jumpers at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center in Rancho Palos Verdes for at least the last thirty years. Traditionally, the best time to see spouting blow-holes and cresting barnacles, usually begins in December and runs through May. As of today (4/4/14) the ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project has observed 1,210 southbound Gray whales during their 2013-14 season.
Not a bad way to spend a South Bay weekend. Whale watching tours can be taken through Voyager Excursions on the King Harbor side of the Redondo Pier and Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers tours until April 15th. Reservations are recommended for booking any whale watching trip.
Below are a list of South Bay Events happening around the beach cities. Enjoy the weekend.
