South Bay Weekend: ISD, Free Movies on the Redondo Pier, CA Art, Celebrity Sweat, Surf 4A Cure & More

Celebrate the joy of surfing Friday down at the Hermosa Beach Pier with a salute to the nearing summer solstice and the burgeoning, official holiday for surfers around the world known as International Surfing Day. What started in 2005 by Surfrider Foundation and Surfer Magazine, ISD provides a one-day platform where businesses, water enthusiasts, and ocean activists come together to exhibit the stoke of all that revolves around surfing. From healthy oceans, to water conservation, and learning how to surf, ISD will be inspiring events all around the world this Friday June 20th and through the weekend.

There are a couple ocean related events this weekend that look to be fun and purposeful as well some other muses. Enjoy the weekend! Below are a list of South Bay Events.

Hurley & Spyder Host International Surfing Day Event at Hermosa Beach Pier One of the bigger ISD events takes center stage on the Hermosa Beach Pier with the help of surf brand and company Hurley and local surf shop Spyder Surfboards this Friday from 6:00am to 3:00pm. On the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier Hurley team members like soul surfing ambassador Rob Machado will be in and around the water encouraging beginning surfers to catch their fist wave, which Hurley has dubbed “Catch Your First Wave Session.” Enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks, learn how you can do your part for the environment with Hurley H20 and Waves For Water, and receive a Hurley x ISD goodie bag. Surf equipment including surfboards and wetsuits will be provided by Hurley and Spyder Surf Shop.

CA101 2014 Art Exhibition – June 20-29: Friday, June 20, 2014 – 5:00 PM This year’s CA101 2014 invitational art exhibition features local and visiting artists showcasing their artwork in unique gallery locations in Pier Plaza on the Redondo Beach pier from June 20 to June 29. Opening night will be held June 20 from 5pm to 9pm. More Info

Free Movies on The Boardwalk at the Redondo Beach Pier – American Graffiti: Friday, June 20, 2014 – 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm The Redondo Pier Association continues their inaugural Free Movies on the Boardwalk at the Redondo Beach Pier this Friday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m. This free event will feature movies every Friday evening throughout the month of June with remaining features from American Graffiti and Frozen. The Redondo Pier Association invites visitors to arrive early and enjoy a pre-movie bite to eat or drink at one of the many restaurants located on Fisherman’s Wharf and International Boardwalk. Celebrity Sweat Ultimate Fitness Challenge: Saturday, June 21, 2014 – 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Celebrity Sweat®, the #1 celebrity fitness campaign, is kicking off the 3rd season of its Celebrity Sweat Fitness Expo series and will be on the Strand in Hermosa Beach June 21st from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Celebrity Sweat’s Ultimate Fitness Challenge is a free day of fitness that offers all types of workout classes in yoga, zumba, kick-boxing, cross-fit and more. More Info

South Bay Dozen The South Bay Dozen is a one-day event that aims to encourage community, health, philanthropy, and fun by way of ocean racing. The event is hosted by The Jimmy Miller Foundation, and facilitated by participating sponsors. All event proceeds are donated to The Jimmy Miller Foundation. The competition will be held on Saturday, June 21st at Torrance Beach. It will include competitors of all ages, male and female. More Info

Surf 4A Cure Surf Relay this Sunday at Torrance Beach This Sunday at Torrance Beach watch teams of 12 surfers compete in an old school style surf relay in an effort to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research. The event is put on by The Young and Brave Foundation and is hosted by Surf 4A Cure where at least two surfers from each team must be in the water one hour during the six hour surf relay (6:00am – 12noon). All types of surfers are welcome to participate, longboarders, stand-up paddleboarders, and bodyboarders. More Info
