The arts play a big role this South Bay Weekend locally and outside the bubble up the 110 freeway. The LA Art Show, the 200,000 square foot art fair that welcomed more than 50,000 art enthusiasts to the Los Angeles Convention Center last year, will celebrate its 20th Anniversary this year. Founded in 1994, the show has grown from a small regional event featuring 14 galleries to become the largest and longest running platform for fine art, bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. A little closer to home Torrance Art Museum opens two new galleries and a special dark room exhibit this weekend. In Gallery One “Sincerely Yours” artists examine romance in the contemporary world while in Gallery Two the exhibit “Manifest American Myth” uses American ideals like Manifest Destiny, the individual and the growth of a nation to capture what it means to live in the West. The word for “family” in Hawaiian is ohana and that is just one of the feelings that will sound off at the 8th Annual Southern California Slack Key Festival this Sunday at Redondo Beach’s Performing Arts Center. Made possible by Mitch Chang and Kala Koa Entertainment, the Slack Key Festival showcases Hawaiian culture in a variety of flavors. The laid-back, acoustic guitar styles of slack key music bring together Grammy winning musicians from the islands and the mainland in tune for a night of tropical vibrations. Friends of the San Pedro Library presents Authors Day with Steve Lopez: Sunday, January 18, 2015 – 2:00 PM The Friends of the San Pedro Library proudly presents Steve Lopez, an award-winning columnist for the LA Times and author. His non-fiction work, The Soloist, won the PEN USA award for literary non-fiction.
