South Bay Weekend: San Pedro International Film Fest, Beach Workout, Great Glass Pumpkin Patch, Taste of the Pier, Frankenstein & More

That barnacled port city that sits next to the Los Angeles Harbor hosts its third San Pedro International Film Festival starting today and running through Sunday. It’s a sea-breezy mix of global perspectives that brings feature films, shorts, documentaries, music videos, and screenplay contestants together for screenings & discussions all under the classic architecture of historic Grand Warner Theatre. SPIFF aims to offer an all weekend film festival dedicated to local and international artists with an independent spirit. Movies include “1000 Times Goodnight” starring Juliette Binoche Oct. 10 7:30 p.m.; “The Endless Summer” 50th Anniversary Oct. 12 5 p.m.; “Bella Vita” surf documentary Oct. 11 3:00 p.m. A complete list of films, times and tickets are available at www.spiffest.org

Sunscreen Film Festival at Hermosa Beach Community Center: Friday, October 10, 2014 – Sunday, October 12, 2014 Over 100 films entered for competition to this year’s Sunscreen Film Festival featuring workshops and panels dedicated to various aspects of film-making. Movies include “Hoovey,” 7:45 p.m. Oct. 10 and 10 p.m. Oct. 12; and Sean Penn’s The Human Experiment, 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12. Beach Workout to Raise Money for Walk with Sally: Saturday, October 11, 2014 – 11:00am-12:00pm Join Poise Fitness Saturday, October 11th at 11:00am at Dockweiler Beach as they help raise money for Walk With Sally: helping those affected by cancer. They will be hosting a 1-hour workout following a similar 3 category format as signature classes. more info

4th Great Hermosa Beach Glass Pumpkin Patch: Saturday, October 11, 2014 – Sunday, October 12, 2014Come on down for the once a year artistic homage to the art of glass-blowing and Halloween pumpkins. It’s a two day event spent on the front lawn of the Hermosa Beach Community Center. This event will feature at least a thousand glass pumpkin pieces individually made by the glass artist putting on the event. more info

5th Annual Taste of the Pier & Waterfront: Saturday, October 11, 2014 – Sunday, October 12, 2014 – 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm The Redondo Beach Pier Association & King Harbor Association invite the South Bay to its 5th Annual Taste of the Pier & Waterfront this Saturday & Sunday noon to 4:00 p.m. on the one and only Redondo Beach Pier. A portion of the proceeds will benefit: Cancer Support Community and Walk with Sally for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 19th Annual Halloween Ball Benefiting Pediatric Therapy Network : Sunday, October 12, 2014 – 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM Support the children of Pediatric Therapy Network by attending The Depot’s 19th Annual Halloween Ball hosted by Chef Michael Shafer of The Depot and Buffalo Fire Department! This annual fundraiser will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2014 from 4 to 9 pm in front of the Depot Restaurant in Torrance under a ghostly white tent. more info

ESMoA Presents: HOME is Where The Art Is Exhibit: Sunday, October 12, 2014 – 10:00 AM At a time when celebrity decorators draw eyes across the Internet and cable TV, HOME is where the art is. Though choosing works to match the color of your sofa is generally frowned upon, when you get right down to it, most every art collection has been started in this way. HOME opens at ESMoA at 10:00 a.m. on October 12, 2014 with an introduction at 2:00 p.m. and activities for the whole family are offered throughout the day. Old Town Music Hall: “Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff: Friday, October 10, 2014 – Sunday, October 12, 2014Where classic silent films have been regularly scheduled in an authentic 1920s movie house with the Mighty Wurlitzer accompanying since 1968. Get your classic horror movie fix this weekend as the 1931 original version of “Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff silently creeps upon the screen at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. more info
