South Bay Weekend: Cooling Centers, Roller Derby, Lomita Fair, Oktoberfest, Chalk Art Festival, Super Diamond, TAM, The Last Waltz & The Point

Hot. Hot. Hot. It’s even hard not to look outside from the comforts of modern refrigeration and feel the heat with your own eyes. The photo below that depicts a relatively clear view from atop Palos Verdes to Downtown LA feels hot, although it was taken last year in April. Warm rain, warm wind and puffs of humidity are really not the common customers this time of year. To install air-conditioning or not to install air-conditioning, that is the question.

Here’s a long list of some local “cooling centers” around Los Angles County that have been pooled together by Southern California Edison. Del Amo Fahsion Center is still under remodeling construction but it’s got great indoor walking space, new patio cafes and a ton of cold air. Below are a list of South Bay Events happening this weekend.

Beach Cities Roller Derby Bout: Superheroes – Redondo Riots vs Hermosa Hitgirls: Friday, September 11, 2015 – 8:00 PM – 1:00 AM Friday night Roller Derby returns to the Port! There will be Full Contact Women’s flat track Roller Derby with two closely matched teams that know each other very well. Also there will be local bands, food, alcohol, vendors, after party and a unique Friday night experience. All ages welcome. Alcohol with ID. 33rd Annual Lomita Fair: Friday, September 11, 2015 – Sunday, September 13, 2015 The 33rd Annual Lomita Fair will be held Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13 at the corner of Eshelman Ave. and 255th St. in Lomita. The hours are Friday, 5 to 11 PM Saturday, 11 AM to 11 PM and Sunday, Noon to 9 PM. Admission is FREE! The Fair is one of the largest in the area drawing around 40,000 visitors every year. more info

2015 Oktoberfest Opening Night at Alpine Village: Friday, September 11, 2015 – Saturday, September 12, 2015 – 5:00 PM The world’s biggest, most inviting beer drinking festival exports its Bavarian heritage to the South Bay and beyond when Alpine Village opens its doors once again for another season of Oktoberfest this Friday and Saturday. One of the longest running Oktoberfests in all of Southern California starts tonight with all the groovy Bavarian customs like Warstiner beer, stein holding contests, a couple chicken dances and authentic Om-Pah-Pah music imported straight from Germany. 13th Annual Chalk Art Festival on the Pier: Saturday, September 12, 2015 – 12:00 – 4:00 pm The Redondo Beach Pier Association presents the 13th Annual Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, September 12 from noon to 4 p.m. Aspiring and experienced artists are invited to participate in this colorful event intended to transform the Pier into a canvas over the water. All ages are welcome, there is no fee to register and free chalk will be given away to the first 150 registrants. Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories. Super Diamond at Saint Rocke: Saturday, September 12, 2015 – 9:00 PM San Francisco’s Super Diamond has become one of the most popular live shows at major nightclubs, theaters, ballrooms and public events throughout the United States. For over a decade the band has consistently performed sell-out shows at venues such as Irving Plaza in New York, 930 Club in Washington D.C., Bimbo’s in San Francisco, and House of Blues venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland and Dallas to name but a few. An Odyssey – 10th Anniversary Celebration: Saturday, September 12, 2015 – 6:00 – 9:00 PM Did you know the Torrance Art Museum is turning 10 years old? Join us as we celebrate the TAM’s anniversary through a wonderful fundraising gala presented by the Torrance Art Museum Advocates (TAMA). Food, drinks, music and a good time will be provided for all! Over 300 works of art will be available for sale from the various artists who exhibited at the museum over the past decade. Surfs Up Festival at The Point: Sunday, September 13, 2015 – 12:00pm – 4:00pm There is no need to know how to surf to enjoy this family fun-filled afternoon at The Point.
